I reacted in an objective manner when I read in the news that there were some groups calling for probe of the Smart-Sun deal.
In my facebook account, I said the following words in one of the website that posted this news.
"This will not create monopoly since Globe is still operating. If Globe filed its intention because they see a monopoly to arise, then I personnaly suggest that they address customer concerns fast and accurately. I'm in favor of this acquisi...tion because Globe has been poorly performing on its DSL, Landline and even wireless broadband. I returned to SMART in my mobile, PLDT in landline and SMART bro in broadband because I was pissed off the way Globe (Innove) handled their services." See my previous blog (click here)
You might be asking why on earth would I write such comment against Globe. We'll I suggest that you read my previous blog (click here) so you will be guided. The news features that a consumer group named Samahan Laban sa Monopolyo (SlaM) through its Convenor Jess Sandow in their statement released June 20, 2011 that the Department of Justice (DOJ) should look into probing the Smart-Sun deal.
The reason for this investigation is the possibility of handling monopoly of the telecommunications media in favor of SMART. “We request our good Secretary to look into the looming approval by the National Telecommunication Commission (NTC) of PLDT-Smart’s acquisition of franchise in telecommunication airwaves being held by Sun Cellular. The NTC is set to hold a hearing in the coming week and we are worried it will approve the larger franchise for this newly merged company, despite growing opposition to it,"-Jess Sandow
Globe Telecom Inc was also in favor of this move as it previously called for an intervtion from the Philippine Government around April this year as this would curtial the return of a monopoly in the telecommunications industry. This is really like a kid asking from his parent to make the competitions equal. BUT, how can it be equal when many of its subscribers returned to PLDT-SMART because of the lousy services provided by Globe? Even Hon. Juan Ponce Enrile agrees with his statement that “this is a situation when a loser is complaining against the winner."
TXTPower and TXTMate already projected that once the merger will be complete, Smart-Sun will have 70 percent control of the mobile telecommunications industry and only 30 percent to Globe.
