Candelaria: The Patroness of Western Visayas. It means JARO FIESTA!
A great celebration is witnessed every February 2 of the year. For students, it means a celebration because all road networks leading to the city is closed. For workers from Jaro or any other town which will pass through Jaro, this is also a celebration because they can file their vacation leaves.
Who would ever want to go against the flow? Even big schools that are not Catholic are forced to stop classes and "celebrate" this Feast of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria (Our Lady of the Candles)-the Patroness of Western Visayas. This is a celebration religious celebration, which is well-known in the Philippines. This is marked by the Holy Mass celebration in the Jaro Cathedral where the image of the Our Lady can be viewed. It is believed that the image is miraculous and that it grows every year. A non-religious celebration such as events in pageantry and coronation of the Jaro Fiesta Queen and cockfigthing are considered as one of the many highlights sought after by many Filipinos. With full anticipation from the dwellers, as early as December of each year, the adjacent plaza Jaro is already full of merchandise ready for bargains. These bargians are in the form of jars, plants, flowers, clothes, accessories and etc. Carnival rides, games and other entertainment kiosks set up in the plaza.
I am excited every year because this is my vacation day (from my regular work schedule). This is a time to pig out as free food from the residence of Jaro is served starting lunch time until the wee hours of the morning.
